Yes, those plugins (among others) only work on the 'local' host. You need a way to install those plugins on the remote host, execute them remotely, then return the relevant data to the Nagios server.
You *could* use check_by_ssh to do the remote execution/retrieval. Great for a secure way of doing things, but won't scale well in the long run (assuming you have hundreds and hundreds of remote checks to do).
Take a look at NRPE, which is quite popular. NSCA is another alternative, but not the only one. Check out the Downloads page on www.nagios.org.
