newbie's questions

[snort bsd]

hi:

how does Nagios determin the network devices it
monitor? bases on ip addresses or those devices have
to have DNS name and with reverse DNS lookup?

nagios -v nagiso.cf kept failling by saying:

Reading configuration data...

Error: Could not find host 'xx-xx-xxxx'

Error: Could not expand member hosts specified in
hostgroup (config file
'/usr/local/nagios/etc/hostgroups.cfg', line 39)


***> One or more problems was encountered while
processing the config files...

but the device xx-xx-xxxx is alive with no DNS
record...

any suggestions?
