check_tcp send and expect strings

Has anyone been successful in sending login strings (-s switch) through
check_tcp, for example sending a username and password to a ftp server or
pop server and using the expect (-e) switch to check the status? I'd like to
eliminate our interpreted ftp and pop plugins, but I can't seem to get
check_tcp to function in this manner properly. It may just be a limitation
with check_tcp. If so, I'll just continue doing what I'm doing now.
Thanks for your time,
Jason Lancaster
