Blank Email Notifcations & check_external_commands

Hello,

1. All of a sudden, I receive blank email notifications
when services go down.  Is there some property that
controls this?

2. Also, when I set the check_external_commands=1 and I
try to restart the service, nagios does not startup.
It just gives me the following:

Starting network monitor: nagios
  PID TTY          TIME CMD
