Just because it's not going to be integrated into the main source does
not mean it's not going to be available. This is one of the many reasons
that the event broker exists. I'm sure that it won't be long before an
event broker handler is created to emulate or enhance the current
database behavior. While nagios may internally use flat-files for state
storage, the information could still be available in any type of DB that
can be connected to from linux/unix, in whatever format you desire with
historical data for as long as you cared to store it and not just
current data.
