Control of event handlers in Nagios

Is it possible to control the behaviour of event handlers in Nagios 1.1 ?

I have setup some event handlers and they work correctly. but I would like
to have a bit more control over when the event handler is run (instead of
being automatically triggered).

Does anyone have any examples of how to run an event handler manually ?
