Unfortunately, that won't always work; what if that service just stays down?
Then the whole box is considered 'down' just because that service failed to
start.
I think what Josh is looking for is a way to suppress notifications for a
certain period after a box becomes up for certain services. I know I have
the exact same problem with some dialup equipment I maintain; The modems
take about 2 minutes longer to boot than the ethernet card, so the box is
'up' about two minutes before the cards become okay. But if one of the cards
is dead, and I make the ping check dependant on that card, then the whole pop
is down, when really I just have one card to fix.
Any ideas on what could be done in these instances?
