Is there a way to delay UP;HARD checks?

Unfortunately, that won't always work; what if that service just stays down?  
Then the whole box is considered 'down' just because that service failed to 
start.

I think what Josh is looking for is a way to suppress notifications for a 
certain period after a box becomes up for certain services.  I know I have 
the exact same problem with some dialup equipment I maintain;  The modems 
take about 2 minutes longer to boot than the ethernet card, so the box is 
'up' about two minutes before the cards become okay.  But if one of the cards 
is dead, and I make the ping check dependant on that card, then the whole pop 
is down, when really I just have one card to fix.

Any ideas on what could be done in these instances?
