Multiple Servers on the internet -- possible?

Peter

Thanks for the response. Basically, my situation is similar to the you have
identified! Here is the environment I am operating in:

1. I have 3 web servers (most of them hosting multiple sites - virtual
hosting) on 3 different networks.
2. I have 1 host that I want to set-up 1 monitoring host on one of the
networks, that will monitor the following:
	a. http availability (for all the sites that are hosted). So, say server1
has n sites, server2 has x sites and server 3 has y sites I want to monitor
(n + x + y) sites. -- for this I guess check_http should work just fine!
	b. cpu usage - by host
	c. bandwidth usage - by host
	d. memory usage - by host
	e. core dumps and page faults - by host
	f. Essential services up and running - Sendmail, PostgreSQL, etc

I understood the VPN point that you had raised. I am not too familiar with
VPNs (and perhaps this is not the forum for getting an understanding about
VPNs), but will I need to set-up 2 NICs on my hosts to establish a reliable
VPN between 2 networks? i.e. 1 for the regular connections and 1 solely for
the VPN?

Regards

KS

Yes there are security issues.

What sort of security issues that are involved depend on the host based
and network based security and what you are looking to monitor. For
example, if you are monitoring a web site (www.yahoo.com) to check
internet connectivity. Then the standard check_http should work, and you
would just have to secure the outside interface of the machine used to run
the monitor. If you are looking to monitor your own web servers, you are
presented with a very different challenge. The key thing is to not rely on
any single protocol, single piece of hardware, or single device to protect
your applications, networks and hosts.
In short, you should fully secure each of your web server farms, build
secure VPN connections between the web sever farms, and regularly monitor
all of the log files.

If you can tell us more about what you are attempting to accomplish,
perhaps we can help more.

Hi all

I want to be able to use Nagios to monitor 3-4 servers (running RedHat
Linux). What kind of access do I require on each box if they are all
internet server (not on the same local network). Are there any security
issues that I need to keep in mind before setting this up?

Any input appreciated in advance!

Cheers

KS
