Jeff --
I ran the rrdtool fetch command with the appropriate syntax, and I am
getting a bunch of "nan"s. It
appears, according to what you said, that the values are not being
collected. How do I correct this?

Nag ios
make sure your apan.defs file is all correct.
and in there, there are 4 debug-related lines - DEBUG, DEBUGFILE,
CGIDEBUG, and CGIDEBUGFILE. Set DEBUG and CGIDEBUG to 1 (or more, if
you need it) then check the two files for info.
Can you pull values via rrdtool manually? Obviously change this to your
paths:
/usr/local/rrdtool/bin/rrdtool fetch
/usr/local/nagios/rrd/serverA_Ping.rrd AVERAGE
(that should be one line, if it wraps for you)
If you see a bunch of "nan"s, you're not collecting your values.
