send_nsca configuration confusion

I'm trying to automate some testing using send_nsca.
I've written a script which will check a database for recent updates
from specific locations which I have created as hosts, and I'm trying to
get the script to output send_nsca commands.
I'm not sure how to (or whether I even should) add the checks to
checkcommands.cfg, or to services.cfg.
There really isn't much documentation on how to configure the nagios to
use the send_nsca data, but the documentation on how to send the checks
using it is quite good.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
John Stotler
