stale state continues....please help

I have nagios 1.2, rh9.  I stopped nagios, purged status.sav, restarted.   
Several different service checks stay in PENDING state, and never change.   
All the others work fine.  No commonalities between them.  PING work for  
one system, and not the next.  Just stays in PENDING....I can see the  
service check scheduled, but the status never changes.
