[PMX:#] Alternative to check-host-alive?

We need to monitor the host status of several hosts housed at our external hosting facility.  Unfortunately, with our anal network rules, ping isn't allowed (it just times out).  Is there a worthwhile alternative to ping/check-host-alive that works at the host level?  

We have service checks for the boxes working nicely, we just want to be able to do a ping-like test for the host.
