Monitoring NT Directory File Count

I need to monitor the count of files in a directory on NT.  In the past
I've gotten around this by using a windows performance counter that was
provided by the product I was monitoring, but in this particular case, I
need to monitor Symantec's Antivirus for Gateways queue and there is no
performance counter-

 

I wasn't jazzed about the idea of using NRPE_NT and writing a perl
script to do it, though it would be simple...

 

Ideas?
