Nagios startup problem

[Newbie]

I am a former NetSaint user and have done a clean setup of Nagios and have 
performed a check of the configuration file using the -v parameter. There 
were no errors however when I try to start nagios up by issuing a ./nagios 
start I get "list of process ids must follow -p" along with a screen full 
of parameters. This happens whether I use the start or status parameter to 
nagios. Using Suse 8.2

Can anyone offer a suggestion what the problem might be?
