Trying Nagios for the First Time

I would suggest first:
/usr/bin/nagios -v /etc/nagios/nagios.cfg
This will check all of your configuration files, if those are not setup
correctly
then you nagios will not start up. -v option will not start nagios, but
it will
check your configuration files.
