how to reset uptime values

I have been trying to reset my uptime values to zero for the new year. 
However nothing I try seems to work.  My setup is a standard nagios set 
to store all data in SQL (mysql to be exact).

When I stop nagios the host and service status table is empty.  Ok, so 
maybe it reads the data from $NAGIOS/var/*.out.  So I stopped nagios and 
moved the files.  When nagios started back up the old data was still there.

What am I missing?
