Accurate check time

Hello,

I have net with cca 400 servers and 2000 services. Nagios can check all hosts 
and services but time between checks is too long - I need 1 minute period by 
critical services. I have tried all possible configuration options, limits 
are very high (more than I need) but Nagios cannot run checks in time.
My latest configuration is 4 Nagios instances (3 monitoring + 1 for collecting 
data) but periods are still too big (from 1.5 min to 5 mins).
Pipe buffer is 32Kb, cpu and ram are unused, but nagios don't run next checks  
until all previous are completed (and some are too slow - ie. ping - 4s).

Some ideas how ensure accurate timing of checks ?
