/bin/ping

hi
i have nagios 1.2 with plugins 1.3 on gentoo sparc64

i have problem with check_ping which result is when it fails /bin/ping -n ....

but i see that if the box nagios is checking is down ( icmp destination 
unreachable )
i have this error , but if there is no box with this ip ( no message when 
executing the ping command )
i have CRITICAL plugin timed out .

for box which are up , all works fine .

permission are good for /bin/ping ( 4755 )
if someone could help me
