plugin installation on remote host

Hi!!
I tried to install Nagios plugins on the remote host. But since i didnt do 
nagios installation there, I got error while doing make install saying that 
user nagios does not exist.

1)is it not possible to install the plugins without installing nagios first,

or

2)is it not possible to install plugins by any other name? If Nagios user is 
necessary to exist, can i simply create a user named nagios and proceed?

The remote machine is a live gateway, and i'm a newbie, so i have to be 
extra catious.
