host down, no service check-> no notification

Hi,
I have some hosts that I just monitor if they are up or down. For this I
use the check_ping command. I tested this by disabeling the switch port or
shutting down the interface of the host. The webinterface shows correct
"host down", but no notification by mail/winpopup was sent out.
In the documentation I found the description of "check_command
check-host-alive" in hosts.cfg, which I used before. If I understand this
right, no notification will be sent out, if this option is set and the
host is not reachabel.
If I disable "check_command check-host-alive", I get notified if the host
is not reachable (this what I want).
Are there any pitfalls in doing this that way. Is there a better (right
way) to get notified if a host with no service check goes down? These
hosts are dhcp servers behind a router, so I can't use the check_dhcp
plugin, I just want to see if they are alive.
Thanks, Ralf
