I can't reproduce this on my Solaris 9 system.
Try running check_http under gdb if you have it:
> gdb ./check_http
> run <args to check_http that cause it to fail>
> bt <backtrace stack (after it seg faults)>
This should show more about where it died.
You can get gdb off sunfreeware.

Nagios was compiled on this box using gcc
Any idea how to stop this from core dumping? Or point me to a URL
content checker that works? I don't really want to write my own if can
avoid it.
The problem is if the web server dies, nagios does not report an error.
(check_ping works from this server)
The same test from a linux workstation does not crash if the web server
is dead.
