Figured it out. Nagios needs to write to /var/tmp/nagios/status.sav but
the permissions were not right. There was no error message to indicate
this.

Subject: [Nagios-users] NAGIOS CRITICAL - could not find
status log: /var/log/nagios/status.log
I have Nagios running successfully on one box and I cloned it on another.
The second box has problems. When Nagios starts up, I see the log like
below and the CGIs do not show the status info. The status.log file is not
being created. I checked permissions, nagios.cfg etc. and everything
seems OK. Can someone give me a handle? I checked the config with the -v
and it reported only warnings, none of which is related to this. Thanks
for the help.
