Rewrite the shell script in perl or python or ruby or rexx or C or C++ or
whatever else you're familiar with that has the features you need (which
is why I didn't mention Java) and doesn't impose a significant overhead
(which is why I didn't mention Java). 

I like the way perl smells.  It smells of camel toes. :)
