odd problem with check_dns

I am checking a total of 9 servers with a generic check_dns template using
nagios 1.2, 4 of the servers respond properly, 5 do not. If I check from
command line with libexec/check_dns -H www.yahoo.com -s {hostname} (which
should be the same as the checkcommand.cfg command) it works most of the time
(it has timed out a few times which I don't see as being a problem) these 5
hosts are in the same host_name line in the services.cfg file.
meanwhile ...
ok I just tried using check_dig, same results. so weird.
I also tried as nagios user to just make sure that worked as well and it did.
I'm stumped.
any suggestions whatsoever?
