Can't configure with --status-map

Here is my setup:
Solaris 9
using nagios 1.2
I downloaded and installed gd-2.0.33 and it seemed to compile and
install fine.
I believe the libraries installed into /usr/local/lib.

Here is my problem:
No matter where I point the configure script for nagios, it complains it
can't find the graphics libraries.

Any ideas on how to make it work?
