How to check Nagios itself??

I am using nagios on our servers and it is doing fine. But now I want
to check if Nagios is  still working (Control the Controller). Of
course it can be done by Nagios itself (but who is going to report a
down state??) or another Nagios running somewhere else. But how do you
check if Nagios is still running from, lets say the other side of the
world by not using Nagios. Any ideas someone???
