Initial nagios configuration

I am just starting out as well.  My initial configuration is using the
minimal.cfg instead.  Everything is working fine so far.  Of course,
if you decide to go the same route you have to make the relevant
changes in nagios.cfg.  you can manually make those config files.  See
the bigger.cfg file and copy out of it.
