Nagios data files

Peeps,

    Might be that I'm dense, and just can't find the information in the
documentation, but where does nagios store the host/service state
information at? In the nagios.log or nagios.sav file? If so, how are these
updated? Is it a ongoing thing, where there'll be an entry for the
host/service DOWN, and another entry later on for host/sevice UP?
