Hi Bagus,

Yes, you can monitor switchs by SNMP for example. You can try the
check_traffic plugin, it uses rrdtool to have performances graph on the
selected ports.
You can make a regular ping to verify the state of your equipment. And all
the infos, collisions, CRC errors, etc.... are available by SNMP depending
the model of switch you want to monitor.

For telnet use the check_tcp plugin, for example :

# Service definition for checking if telnet is open
#define service{
#use generic-service
#host_name Whatever
#service_description Check Telnet
#is_volatile 0
#check_period 24x7
#contact_groups nagios-admins
#notification_options c,r
#check_command check_tcp!23
#}

make a ./check-tcp -h to have infos to how use this plugin. It can do a lot
of things.
