parents definition

Hi

in the hosts.cfg is a parameter called 'parents'. I have understood
the idea of 'parents' and find it great. However, in what cfg do I
specify a parent? 
When testing the config I'm getting this:
Error: 'switch' is not a valid parent for host 'host1'!
        Checked 1 hosts.
