>From NetworkWorld:
Network management goes open source, 05/16/05
Open source vendors and developers are bringing a new breed of products to
market that could shatter that perception and provide customers with
inexpensive, flexible and easy-to-integrate management tools.

Several open source products mentioned (Nagios, MRTG), some forgotten
(OpenNMS for example).
Most enterprise management systems are quite (extremely?) expensive. No
reason why open source products could not be as successful as other well
known projects. Of course, development and testing require more resources
if you want to support a wide range of platforms to manage (network and
system).
