Nagios will automagically do this if you have a valid host check_command
specified that returns CRITICAL if the host is down.

Can you run the host check_command, exactly as it's defined, as the
nagios user and receive a CRITICAL state ('echo $?' should return '2'
after running the command) when the host is down?
