Email notify for local host

i have just got nagios fully working but i am only getting email notifies 
for other hosts and checks. should i be getting email alerts for local 
checking like check_procs and check_users? the event log shows that they are 
logged as alerts but not notifications. i have looked at the config and i 
cant see anything different. thank you for any ideas. Brooke.
