This file resides in the sbin directory (which is also cgi-bin). Note
though - change the AuthUserFile path to wherever you are storing the
htpasswd.users file.

 

It doesn't have to reside in the sbin directory, in fact since that
directory is remotely/publically accessible via the webserver, its
probably a better idea that it isn't. As long as the path in ur
.htaccess or httpd.conf is accessible by your webserver user, and the
file writable by the same, it can be anywhere on the file system.

 

When i was getting the 'return from whence you came error', this was
exactly my problem - i hadn't set up authorisation correctly and the
above was how i fixed it. 

 

Incidentally, I have the authentication set up identically as described
in the manual (with paths changed accordingly), and mine doesn't work
:-)
