Did you recompile nagios after you installed libgd, etc? Any compiler errors/warnings? Maybe your gd installation isn't found? Check the output of ./configure.
You do not need any fancy server hardware to run nagios. You can use virtually any client pc in your network - static ip address would be helpful, though :)
