I'm really sorry, I did try your /etc/hosts.allow suggestion, but I
must have done something wrong, because when I tried changing
hosts.deny from

ALL: ALL EXCEPT localhost

to

ALL: ALL EXCEPT localhost,myip

it suddenly started working.  So it obviously was a tcpwrappers issue
after all, sorry for mistakenly concluding otherwise.
