Notification script problems.. How do I debug

The script is rwxr-xr-x
The logs aren't very helpful, is there a verbose logging feature I can
enable? I didn't see anywhere I can increase the amount of data it puts
out...

Have you checked any log for errors? Maybe you have a permissions
problem on your sms script.

My contacts.cfg calls the notify-by-sms.

contactgroups contains myself and another tech here. We both get e-mail
messages about critical services, but I don't get a SMS. 

 

This is in Nagios 1.2.2 btw...

What do your services.cfg file conrtain about enabling sms messages ?
