nagios stops checking

About once a week, nagios stops checking. a restart fixes the problem.
The problem has mostly recently been with 2.3.1.

a config check lists 5 warnings for hosts with no services associated,
but otherwise ok.

I don't see anything telling in the logs. I'm wondering how I could turn
up the logging verbosity to try and catch what is going on.

Or is there a better way to troubleshoot this problem?
