Remove the ' ' between the \ and the n in your command definition.

Run 'man mail' and make sure that the -s parameter specifies the subject
for your version of mail. Make sure that it looks like ' ... |
/usr/bin/mail -s "Host DOWN alert for host.xx-xx.xx.x!' in your command
definition.
