No, it waits about 7 seconds.

Yes! A few of these:
May 5 14:34:03 survivor nrpe[19415]: refused connect from 192.168.2.30
(192.168.2.30)
Could this just be an issue where nrpe is configured not to accept any
connections from that network? There are two interfaces on survivor.
eth0 is connected to another network.
