Acknowledging ports down on a swith

I have noticed that when ports on a switch go down, say ports 5 and 7, and I
acknowledge this critical in my view, if port 3 and 4 go down on the same
switch it will not bring the critical error back up.
This is how I am testing it:
I enable ports 7 and 9 on the switch, there is nothing connected into these
ports so it throws up a service error. In the description for the service error
it shows both ports 7 and 9 down. I then acknowledge this service error and it
gets removed from my view.
I then disable ports 3 and 4 and the error does not come back letting me know
that there is a problem on different ports. I am using the check_ifstatus to
query the switch, is there a better way of doing this or will I need to set up
a service for each port?
Thanks for any help,
Jon
