I have used nmap to Nagios with some success. I have been thinking about
how to automate this but I keep seeing potential issues like rogue
devices or adding services that I don't care to monitor. Plus I just
don't like the idea of a program overwriting my configs without my
concent when it comes to this. I'm looking at modifying how it works to
be a bit more functional for this need. One thing that a lot of new
monitoring systems have is auto discovery and I think it will be a good
addition to Nagios to keep it as one of the best. It may work fine for
you so give it a look.
