Actually, putting all the "active probing" solutions aside, wouldn't  
it be better to go about things the other way around?

What we plan on doing is the following:
Each of our servers gets installed with a standard build, consisting  
of OS, patches and various pieces of software + configuration.  
Included with this software is our Nagios client software, which is  
already fully configured. This Nagios client software includes a  
script that is run once, automatically after installation, and which  
alerts the Nagios servers of a new client system. The Nagios servers  
then proceed to automatically generate the relevant pieces of  
configuration.

Seems like a nicer, safer way to go about things.
