service_check_timeout not working

Hi,
I'm running Nagios (on FreeBSD) and I'm having a problem with a script
running much longer than it should, which is much more time than is
set with the service_check_timeout in my configuration. In other
words, the offending service check process is not being killed by
Nagios as it should. The check script is written in PHP and the
situation this problem occurs in is when it connects to a socket but
receives no response.
Any suggestions as to why this might be occuring or how I might fix it
would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
