check_proc on NRPE gives "System call sent warnings to stderr"

My bad, it's the same for anything check_procs related --
check_procs_[java/sshd/httpd...]

On the target machine, I get the same error, regardless of whether I'm the
Nagios user or the root

e.g.

[root at mybox plugins]# ./check_procs
System call sent warnings to stderr
PROCS WARNING: 101 processes

[root at mybox plugins]# sudo nagios

and I get

sh-3.00$ ./check_procs
System call sent warnings to stderr
PROCS WARNING: 103 processes
sh-3.00$

Thanks for your help.  Any advice or hints would be greatly appreciated!
