Struggling with Service Definitions without Hostgroups

I think my problem was trying to use an older 1.x configuration file with
2.x. I still have the hostgroup definitions and my sytanx check is coming
up clean.
This is what I was getting with the 1.x nagios.cfg.

Reading configuration data...

files...
Check your configuration file(s) to ensure that they contain valid
directives and data defintions. If you are upgrading from a previous
version of Nagios, you should be aware that some
variables/definitions
may have been removed or modified in this version. Make sure to read
the HTML documentation regarding the config files, as well as the
'Whats New' section to find out what has changed.
the best way to solve a problem is to post something to a public list that
makes you look like an idiot... you're guaranteed to solve the problem
shortly after posting....
thanks,
