installing Nagios on shared Debian box (Dreamhost)?

Hmmm...so, what if I only start up Nagios with cron and run it
periodically?  Would that count as a persistent process?

Does Nagios support that sort of thing, and if so, would it work ok if I
were to run it, say, every 20 minutes or so?
