Possibly because the vmware networking stuff isn't set up properly on
boot.
I'd really recommend you not to run your monitoring server as a vmware
guest. Besides the fact that system clocks usually gets a royal screwover
by vmware, it's a tremenduously bad idea to have your monitoring system
depend on something it's monitoring.
