nope not what i said :-)
CFLAGS="-I/usr/local/include -I/usr/sfw/include"\
LDFLAGS="-s -R/usr/local/lib:/usr/sfw/lib -L/usr/local/lib -L/usr/sfw/lib"\
./configure --prefix=$NAGIOSHOME --with-nagios-user=nagios --with-nagios-grp=nagios\
--with-perlcache --enable-embedded-perl --with-gd-inc=/usr/local/include\
--with-gd-lib=/usr/local/lib
or CFLAGS=$CFLAGS LDFLAGS=$LDFLAGS ./configure ...
and check what the config.log file reports
