Nagios and automatic configuration

There are a few interesting tools on there to automate configuration.
It's not something supported "out of the box" though; I think (speaking
from experience) most deployments use some kind of custom script
grabbing information out of LDAP to generate the configuration?
Alternatively you could do selective scans (with nmap) over certain
ranges to 'find' your Infrastructure, and build with templates?
One of the more interesting tools for doing all this is NACE.
